HYDERABAD, INDIA – Velamati Chandra Sekhara Janardhan Rao (86), a prominent industrialist and head of the Veljan Group, was brutally murdered by his grandson in Somajiguda, Hyderabad, police confirmed Saturday. The accused, identified as Kilaru Kirti Tej (29), was arrested following the incident that occurred on Thursday night.

According to Panjagutta police, the murder stemmed from a family dispute over the distribution of Mr. Janardhan Rao’s assets. Kirti Tej, the son of Mr. Janardhan Rao’s daughter, Sarojini Devi, had recently received a significant share of the Veljan company, sparking conflict with his cousin, Sri Krishna. This conflict escalated into an argument on Thursday night. During the argument, Kirti Tej allegedly stabbed his grandfather 73 times with a knife. When Sarojini Devi intervened, she was also attacked and suffered multiple stab wounds. She is currently recovering in a Jubilee Hills hospital.

Police are investigating the possibility that Kirti Tej was under the influence of drugs. The suspect was apprehended in Panjagutta and remanded into custody.

Mr. Janardhan Rao, originally from Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, had a history of philanthropy, donating significant sums to various hospitals and charities, including a reported ₹40 crore each to the Eluru Government Hospital and the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
