NEW YORK, NY – Legendary sports journalist Hannah Storm, 62, is sharing her experience with breast cancer to encourage women to prioritize their health and undergo regular screenings. Diagnosed with non-invasive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in January 2024, Storm, who had no symptoms or family history, emphasizes the importance of early detection. Her diagnosis, discovered during a routine mammogram, highlights the critical role of preventative care.
Storm credits early detection with saving her life. Following her diagnosis, she underwent a lumpectomy and, after learning about genetic testing, opted for a blood test that revealed important information about her hereditary cancer risk. She is now an advocate for Myriad Genetics’ MyRisk hereditary cancer test, which evaluates 48 genes to assess risk for 11 types of cancer.
“I think people are like, ‘Well, I don’t want to know. It’s super scary,’” Storm says. “I look at it as, well, it’s super empowering. That gives you a game plan for you and your health care provider.”
Storm, who also underwent a hip replacement shortly after her breast cancer surgery, maintains a healthy lifestyle that includes weightlifting, cycling, and a focus on a healthy diet. She encourages women to prioritize their health, even amidst busy schedules, urging them to make appointments a priority.
“One of the things I learned is how many people don’t prioritize themselves, especially women and their own health,” she says. “Moms are working, taking care of kids or taking care of their parents. We tend to take care of everybody else but put ourselves last.”
Despite facing obstacles in her career as a woman in sports journalism, Storm remains resilient, applying the same determination to her health journey as she did to her career. She will be celebrating this weekend’s Super Bowl at home, reflecting on her journey and hopeful for the future.
