**New Delhi, [Date]** – The newly elected Delhi Assembly reflects a notable shift in demographics compared to the 2020 elections, according to data from PRS Legislative Research. While the average age of the 70 MLAs remains at 52, the proportion of younger representatives has decreased. Only 13% of MLAs fall within the 25-40 age bracket, a 10% drop from the previous election. Conversely, nearly half (49%) are aged 41-55, mirroring the 2020 figures. The oldest MLA is 73, while the youngest is 31.
The professional backgrounds of the MLAs show 61% declaring politics or social work as their primary profession, followed by business (49%), law (11%), and agriculture (11%). Literacy is universal among the current representatives, with the least educated MLA having completed fifth grade. A significant 64% hold a graduation degree.
The Assembly also showcases a vast wealth disparity. Karnail Singh is the richest MLA with assets exceeding Rs 259 crore, while Sanjeev Jha’s assets total Rs 14.47 lakh. Three BJP MLAs – Karnail Singh, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and Parvesh Verma – each possess assets exceeding Rs 100 crore.
This year’s election marks a significant decline in female representation. Only five women were elected, four from the BJP and one from the AAP – the lowest number in the last decade. This constitutes a mere 7% of the assembly. This decrease occurred despite a higher voter turnout among women (60.9%) than men (60.2%) in the February 5th election.
