**New Delhi, [Date]** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swept the Delhi Assembly elections, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) seven-year rule in the national capital. The BJP secured a resounding 48 seats in the 70-member assembly, a significant increase from its 8 seats in 2020. The AAP, which previously held 62 seats, was reduced to just 22, while the Congress failed to win a single seat.
Incumbent Chief Minister Atishi submitted her resignation to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena today, following which the Seventh Legislative Assembly was dissolved. Atishi, who retained her Kalkaji seat, served as Chief Minister for nearly five months after Arvind Kejriwal stepped down following his involvement in a corruption case.
The election saw a stunning defeat for several key AAP leaders, including Kejriwal himself, who lost his New Delhi seat to BJP’s Parvesh Verma. Verma, a former MP, is considered a frontrunner for the Chief Ministership. His victory over Kejriwal by a margin of 4,000 votes is being hailed as a major upset.
Kejriwal conceded defeat, stating that he accepts the people’s mandate and congratulating the BJP on their victory. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated BJP workers and thanked Delhi voters, promising that the party would fulfill its promises and focus on the development of Delhi.
A grand swearing-in ceremony for the new BJP government is expected next week, following Prime Minister Modi’s return from a trip to the US. Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend. Discussions regarding government formation are already underway within the BJP leadership, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda meeting today to finalize plans.
