**New Delhi** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to seize control of Delhi from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the national capital. This victory would add another opposition-ruled state to the BJP’s growing list and solidify its regional dominance, as it already governs neighboring Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
The BJP’s campaign successfully targeted AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, portraying him as corrupt in the context of the alleged liquor policy scam, which resulted in his arrest and imprisonment. The controversy surrounding the renovation of Kejriwal’s residence, dubbed the “Sheeshmahal” by the BJP, also fueled the campaign. Furthermore, the BJP’s promises of financial assistance, including Rs 2,500 monthly for poor women and subsidized LPG cylinders, resonated with voters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s prominent role in the campaign was also a key factor.
Despite AAP’s claims of being hampered by the Lieutenant Governor and central government interference, these arguments seemingly failed to sway voters. The BJP’s “double-engine” government pitch – emphasizing the benefits of having the same party in power at both the state and central levels – proved more effective, even though voters had accepted similar AAP claims in 2020. Kejriwal’s emotional appeal for a “certificate of honesty” after his release from jail also fell short. This decisive victory represents a significant reversal of the BJP’s previous humiliating defeats in Delhi in 2015 and 2020.
