Fri Feb 07 21:00:00 UTC 2025: ## PRIMUS Taps John Hoffman as New Drummer After Extensive Search

**Oakland, CA –** Progressive rock band PRIMUS has announced John Hoffman as its new drummer, concluding a months-long search following the departure of longtime member Tim Alexander. Bassist/vocalist Les Claypool revealed the news via Instagram, welcoming Hoffman to the band after a rigorous audition process that saw over 5,000 applicants vying for the position.

The band’s search, launched in November, emphasized musicality and collaborative spirit over flashy technique. Hoffman, based in Shreveport, Louisiana, documented his preparation and audition experience on social media, noting that Tool’s Maynard James Keenan was present and even gifted him a towel.

PRIMUS’s recent Oakland concert at the Fox Theater featured Bryan “Brain” Mantia, who previously filled in for Alexander in the 1990s, on drums. Musicians from Claypool’s side projects, The Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade, also joined the performance. Mantia’s previous stints with PRIMUS included recording two studio albums, *Brown Album* and *Antipop*, as well as the *Rhinoplasty* EP and the *South Park* theme song.

Alexander’s departure, announced in October, followed a letter to *Rolling Stone* magazine where he cited a loss of passion and the toll it took on his physical and mental well-being. He had been with PRIMUS since 1989, with periods of departure and return. His health has also played a role, including a heart attack in 2014 that required triple bypass surgery and a second heart attack in 2016.

PRIMUS will soon embark on tour dates, including a performance at Tool’s Live In The Sand festival where Tool’s Danny Carey will join them. The band’s future plans will see Hoffman at the kit as they embark on the next chapter.
