**New Delhi, February 8, 2025** – The counting of votes for the Delhi Assembly elections is underway, with results expected to shape the political landscape of the national capital for the next five years. Most exit polls predicted a significant win for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), potentially ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule. However, some polls suggested a hung assembly or even a landslide victory for AAP.
The BJP’s potential win would mark a historic return to power after a 27-year absence. For AAP, a victory would signify a third consecutive term for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. A party needs at least 36 seats out of 70 to form a government.
High security measures are in place at all 19 counting centers across Delhi. Candidates from all three major parties—BJP, AAP, and Congress—visited temples this morning to offer prayers before the results are announced.
While BJP leaders expressed confidence in a decisive victory, citing public dissatisfaction with AAP, AAP leaders countered that their performance consistently surpasses exit poll predictions. Congress, despite exit polls predicting a poor showing, remains hopeful.
Key candidates include Arvind Kejriwal (AAP) contesting from New Delhi against BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit; Atishi (AAP) in Kalkaji against Alka Lamba (Congress) and Ramesh Bidhuri (BJP); and Manish Sisodia (AAP) in Jangpura.
The day has seen a flurry of statements from party leaders. BJP leaders highlighted their confidence in forming a government, while AAP leaders expressed confidence in winning over 50 seats and reiterated their allegations of BJP attempting to poach their MLAs. Congress also maintains hope for a victory. The final results will determine the fate of these competing claims. The Election Commission of India will provide official updates on its website throughout the day.
