**New Delhi –** Early trends in the Delhi Assembly election results show a surprising shift in power, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) currently leading in 45 seats and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by incumbent Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, ahead in only 24. Congress is leading in a single seat.
Kejriwal, seeking a fourth term as Chief Minister, is unexpectedly trailing in his own stronghold, the New Delhi constituency, where BJP’s Parvesh Verma is currently in the lead. While early reports showed Kejriwal briefly ahead by a narrow margin of 225 votes, this lead has since been overturned. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit is also contesting in New Delhi.
The election saw a fierce contest between the AAP and BJP, both focusing on promises of improvements to public schools and healthcare. The AAP faced significant challenges this election cycle, particularly the controversy surrounding the Delhi liquor policy, which resulted in months of imprisonment for Kejriwal and his deputy, Manish Sisodia.
Exit polls had predicted a significant BJP victory, forecasting between 45 and 55 seats for the party. The AAP, which has dominated Delhi politics since 2015, winning 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020, faces the possibility of substantial losses. Congress, which failed to win any seats in the previous two elections, is predicted to gain only one. The final results, determining whether AAP will retain power or BJP will return after nearly three decades, are expected later today.
