Thu Feb 06 13:24:43 UTC 2025: ## Family Films Stage a Comeback in South Indian Cinema After a Disastrous 2024

**CHENNAI, INDIA –** The South Indian film industry, reeling from a disastrous 2024 that saw estimated losses of ₹700 crore in Malayalam and ₹1000 crore in Tamil cinema, is experiencing a surprising resurgence. The success of several family-oriented films in January 2025 suggests a potential shift in audience preference away from the action-heavy blockbusters that dominated recent years.

Leading the charge is Telugu film *Sankranthiki Vasthunam*, which grossed a remarkable ₹300 crore worldwide in just three weeks. Directed by Anil Ravipudi, the film, starring Venkatesh, surpassed even Shankar’s *Game Changer* to become the highest-grossing Telugu Sankranti release. In Tamil Nadu, *Madha Gaja Raja*, a film completed in 2013 but recently released, has earned over ₹55 crore. Smaller family films like *Kudumbasthan* have also found success, grossing ₹18 crore.

2024 saw a string of big-budget action films, including *Indian 2*, *Kanguva*, and *Game Changer*, underperform at the box office. This, coupled with the success of Sivakarthikeyan’s *Amaran* (₹340 crore globally) in October, points to a growing appetite for family-friendly entertainment.

Film journalist Bharath Kumar attributes the shift to a previous oversaturation of action dramas and thrillers, neglecting family audiences. He suggests that the success of these recent family films, which offer humor, sentiment, and relatable storylines, demonstrates a desire for wholesome content that allows for family outings to the cinema. The success of films like *Kudumbasthan*, which focuses on the relatable struggles of a family man in the digital age, further supports this assertion.

While it remains to be seen if this trend will continue throughout 2025, the initial success of these family-oriented films suggests a potential turning point for the South Indian film industry, potentially encouraging producers to invest in diverse genres beyond the action-packed blockbusters.
