**Los Angeles, CA** – A new generation of vampire slayers is coming to Hulu. Variety has confirmed that a sequel series to the iconic “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is close to receiving a pilot order. While Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final negotiations to reprise her role as Buffy Summers, she’ll appear in a recurring capacity, not as the lead. The series will instead center around a new Slayer.
The project will reunite several key figures from the original series. Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman (“Poker Face,” “Fringe”) are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland,” “Eternals”) will direct and executive produce. Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton—all involved with the original show—will also executive produce. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce.
Notably absent is Joss Whedon, creator of the original series, following allegations of creating a toxic work environment.
The new series marks a significant return for the beloved franchise, which redefined the landscape of television with its strong female lead and serialized storytelling. The original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ran for seven seasons and continues to hold a large and devoted fanbase. While previous attempts at reboots have failed to materialize, this new project promises a fresh take on the classic story while honoring its legacy. Gellar, currently starring in “Dexter: New Blood” and “Wolf Pack,” will bring her considerable experience to the role. The Zuckermans’ successful track record in television, combined with Zhao’s acclaimed film work, suggests a promising future for this highly anticipated sequel.
