Thu Feb 06 08:50:32 UTC 2025: ## WhatsApp Users Targeted in Global Spyware Attack

**San Francisco/London** – WhatsApp has confirmed a sophisticated spyware attack targeting nearly 90 users across more than two dozen countries. The victims, reportedly including journalists and members of civil society, were compromised via a zero-click exploit using spyware developed by Israeli company Paragon Solutions.

Paragon Solutions, which sells its hacking tools to government clients under the guise of national security and crime-fighting, employed a particularly insidious method. The attack required no user interaction; malicious documents were sent to victims, automatically compromising their devices without them clicking on any links or taking any action. This “zero-click” vulnerability highlights the increasing sophistication and danger of modern spyware.

While WhatsApp declined to name specific targets, citing privacy concerns, *The Guardian* reported that journalists and civil society members were among those affected. The company has since disrupted the hacking operation and is referring affected users to Citizen Lab, a Canadian internet watchdog group, for further assistance. Law enforcement and industry partners have also been notified.

John Scott-Railton of Citizen Lab commented that the incident underscores the continuing proliferation of mercenary spyware and its problematic use. The FBI has yet to respond to requests for comment. The revelation raises serious concerns about the potential for widespread abuse of such technology, targeting vulnerable individuals and undermining freedom of expression.
