**New Delhi, India** – The Indian government is facing intense criticism from opposition parties following the deportation of over 100 Indian nationals from the United States. The deportees, many of whom entered the US illegally, arrived in Amritsar yesterday aboard a US military aircraft, reportedly shackled and handcuffed.
Opposition leaders are questioning why the Indian government did not intervene to secure their return under more humane conditions, citing previous instances where special flights were arranged to repatriate citizens from crisis zones, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict. They argue that India’s economic standing demands better treatment for its citizens abroad.
Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale and Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh highlighted the perceived inaction, contrasting India’s response with that of other nations. Gokhale stated, “We are the fifth largest economy… and our citizens are being shackled in chains.” Singh questioned the circumstances of the military aircraft’s landing and the use of restraints.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar defended the government’s position, stating that countries are obligated to repatriate illegal immigrants and that the US procedures, dating back to 2012, included the use of restraints, though he claimed women and children were not restrained. He emphasized engagement with US authorities to ensure fair treatment. The US Embassy in India affirmed its commitment to enforcing immigration laws.
The controversy has prompted the Indian government to consider a new “Overseas Mobility (Facilitation and Welfare) Bill, 2024,” aimed at improving the safety and well-being of Indian migrants abroad. The bill’s passage could significantly shape future immigration and deportation policies. The opposition continues to demand a stronger response and greater protection for Indian citizens abroad.
