The Aga Khan, a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, held near-divine status within his community, which numbers in the millions across more than 30 countries.
His death marks the end of an era for the Nizari Ismailis, a branch of Shia Islam that traces its lineage through a distinct line of Imams. The Aga Khan’s leadership spanned decades of significant global change, from the end of the Cold War to the rise of digital technology. He was known for his modern outlook and his commitment to bridging divides between cultures and religions.
Beyond his spiritual role, the Aga Khan was a prominent philanthropist.
