Thu Feb 06 11:37:32 UTC 2025: ## Second Judge Blocks Trump’s Attempt to End Birthright Citizenship

**Washington D.C.** – A second federal judge has dealt a blow to President Trump’s efforts to end birthright citizenship in the United States. Maryland District Judge Deborah Boardman issued a temporary injunction blocking the executive order, echoing a similar ruling from a Seattle judge. The order aimed to redefine the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to those born within U.S. borders.

Judge Boardman stated that birthright citizenship is “the law and tradition of our country,” and will remain in effect pending resolution of the ongoing legal challenges. Twenty-two states and several organizations have filed lawsuits arguing the executive order is unconstitutional.

President Trump’s claim that the U.S. is the only country with birthright citizenship is inaccurate. According to the CIA World Factbook, at least 33 countries, primarily in the Americas, grant automatic citizenship based on birth within their borders (jus soli). This list includes Canada, Mexico, and numerous South American nations. Many others offer conditional birthright citizenship.

The 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, has been interpreted for over 150 years to grant citizenship to nearly all individuals born in the U.S., with exceptions for children of foreign diplomats. The amendment’s original intent was to secure citizenship for formerly enslaved people.

The legal battles surrounding birthright citizenship are expected to continue. The nationwide temporary hold on the executive order remains in place while the courts weigh the constitutionality of President Trump’s actions.
