**Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu –** Three government school teachers in Bargur, Krishnagiri district, were arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl on the school campus. The crime came to light when teachers visited the girl’s home on Monday to inquire about her prolonged absence from school, which began in January. The girl subsequently revealed the assault, which she said occurred in a school toilet during the first week of January.
Following the girl’s statement, the school headmistress and block education officer filed a complaint. The accused teachers, from the panchayat union middle school, were immediately suspended. A preliminary internal inquiry found no other complaints against them. Police, along with the Child Welfare Committee, visited the girl and took her to a One-Stop Centre at a local hospital. The accused were arrested based on a complaint from the girl’s mother and are currently remanded. An investigation by the District Child Protection Unit is underway.
The incident sparked outrage among villagers, who staged a road blockade outside the school demanding justice. The case follows a similar incident at a private school in Bargur last year.
Opposition parties have criticized the state government’s response, citing a lack of student safety in schools. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and AMMK general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran both condemned the assault. BJP state president K. Annamalai linked the incident to concerns about drug abuse in the state, citing a significant drop in drug-related arrests. The District ChildLine Officer stated they received no distress call regarding the incident.
