Thu Feb 06 11:21:45 UTC 2025: ## Bangladesh Summons Indian Diplomat Amidst Political Turmoil

**DHAKA, BANGLADESH –** Tensions escalated in Bangladesh on Thursday following the destruction of the Dhanmondi-32 residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and subsequent accusations against Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.

The Bangladeshi government summoned the Head of Mission of the Indian High Commission after Ms. Hasina, currently residing in India, delivered a speech accusing Mr. Yunus of plotting her assassination. The speech, broadcast across Awami League online platforms, followed the demolition of the historic residence by a mob, despite the presence of police.

The Awami League issued a statement condemning the interim government for allegedly providing “immunity” to those responsible and holding Dr. Yunus accountable for the destruction. Ms. Hasina, in her address, described the situation in Bangladesh as “chaos and upheaval,” accusing Mr. Yunus’ government of being “completely unconstitutional” and achieved through “money power and by stepping on the dead bodies of many people.”

Protests continued Thursday, targeting homes of Awami League leaders and resulting in the demolition of a Sheikh Mujibur Rahman memorial in Dhaka. Bangladesh’s ongoing request for Ms. Hasina’s extradition from India, following her August 2024 departure, adds further complexity to the situation. India confirmed receiving Bangladesh’s formal request for repatriation in December 2024, and Bangladesh revoked Ms. Hasina’s passport in January. The escalating violence and political maneuvering have plunged Bangladesh into further uncertainty.
