**New Delhi** – The deportation of 104 Indian nationals from the United States has sparked a major controversy in India’s Parliament. The individuals, who entered the US illegally, were returned on a US military aircraft Wednesday, arriving in Amritsar. The manner of their deportation – described as inhumane and humiliating by opposition members – has led to calls for a parliamentary discussion.
The deportees, including 19 women and 13 minors, arrived handcuffed, a detail that has particularly inflamed public sentiment. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor highlighted the unprecedented nature of the deportation, stating that while deportations have occurred previously, the treatment of these individuals was unacceptable.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today to discuss the situation and is expected to address Parliament later this afternoon. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned shortly after convening due to opposition demands for an immediate debate on the issue.
The 104 individuals originated from various Indian states, with a significant number from Haryana, Gujarat, and Punjab. Upon arrival, they underwent questioning by various Indian agencies. Those residing in Amritsar were transported home by police, while others were sent to their respective states.
The controversial deportation occurred just days before Prime Minister Modi’s scheduled visit to Washington D.C. for talks with President Trump. The timing has fueled speculation about the event’s significance within the broader US-India relationship.
