**New Delhi, February 6, 2025** – President Droupadi Murmu today stressed the urgent need for comprehensive reform of key multilateral bodies, including the UN Security Council, to reflect contemporary global realities. Meeting with Philemon Yang, President of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Murmu highlighted the importance of upcoming UN conferences, including the Fourth Conference on Financing for Development and the Third UN Ocean Conference, assuring India’s active participation.
President Murmu’s call for reform echoes the September 2024 joint statement by the G4 nations (India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan) advocating for permanent UN Security Council membership and structural changes. This sentiment was further reinforced by other plurilateral groups like the L69 and C-10. The G4 statement specifically highlighted the need for better representation of Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean within the UN.
The President commended Mr. Yang’s data-driven approach to sustainable development and his leadership in adopting the Pact for the Future at the UN’s Summit for the Future. She reaffirmed India’s commitment to championing the causes of the Global South, guided by the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family). The meeting also touched upon the strong bilateral relations between India and Cameroon. President Murmu noted India’s special bond with Africa, citing the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s 2023 presidency.
