**Boston, MA** – Free agent Alex Bregman is facing a crucial decision, and MLB insider Buster Olney is sounding the alarm. Bregman, who recently rejected a six-year, $156 million offer from the Houston Astros, is reportedly seeking a longer-term contract. While several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, are interested, Olney strongly advises against a one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs.
Olney, speaking on the “Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney” podcast, called the idea of Bregman signing a short-term contract with the Cubs a “horrific idea.” He cited Wrigley Field’s notoriously difficult hitting conditions for right-handed batters, a significant disadvantage for Bregman, who’s aiming to prove his worth after a .260 batting average season.
Conversely, Olney suggests Fenway Park’s dimensions could be more favorable for Bregman, making the Red Sox a more attractive option. However, the Red Sox’s pursuit of Nolan Arenado through trade talks might complicate Bregman’s potential landing in Boston.
Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, has several options on the table, including the Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, and even a return to the Astros. The clock is ticking, though, with spring training fast approaching. Bregman must decide soon whether to pursue a long-term deal, a shorter-term contract, or potentially wait until next offseason for a more lucrative offer.
