Thu Feb 06 04:15:22 UTC 2025: **India Poised to Develop Own High-End AI Chipsets Within Five Years**
New Delhi, February 6, 2025 – India is on track to develop its own high-end graphics processing units (GPUs) within the next three to five years, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced Tuesday. This follows the government’s initiative to make available 18,000 high-end GPU-based computing facilities for AI development within days. These facilities will be crucial for fostering India’s burgeoning AI sector.
Vaishnaw, speaking at a Budget Roundtable, outlined a strategy involving leveraging existing open-source or licensed chipsets as a foundation for developing indigenous GPUs. He also projected the creation of a homegrown foundational AI platform within the next 10 months. This ambitious timeline reflects India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in artificial intelligence.
The move comes amidst a global surge in demand for GPUs, driven primarily by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence. Currently, US company Nvidia holds a dominant market share of over 80%. While acknowledging the challenges, Vaishnaw highlighted the progress of Indian startups in AI, though still relatively small compared to giants like ChatGPT.
The minister further emphasized the government’s commitment to making high-end computing infrastructure accessible to researchers, startups, and academic institutions at a low cost. This initiative aims to level the playing field and foster innovation across the country. Vaishnaw also refuted criticisms from the opposition, citing the success of the “Make in India” program in boosting mobile phone manufacturing and creating 1.2 million direct and indirect jobs. He highlighted the program’s role in revitalizing India’s manufacturing sector after decades of stagnation.
