NEW DELHI – Voting concluded Wednesday in the Delhi Assembly elections, with a final voter turnout of 57.89%, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The elections saw a fierce three-way contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress. Over 1.56 crore eligible voters participated across 13,766 polling stations.
However, the day was marked by allegations of irregularities from both AAP and BJP, including claims of money distribution and fake voting. These allegations led to several incidents of clashes between party workers and police intervention. The ECI deployed over 30,000 police personnel and 220 companies of paramilitary forces to maintain order.
Exit polls released after voting closed overwhelmingly predict a BJP victory, potentially ending AAP’s seven-year rule. Most polls project the BJP securing a majority, with estimates ranging from 39 to 60 seats in the 70-member assembly. AAP, meanwhile, is projected to win between 20 and 31 seats, while Congress is predicted to win few, if any, seats. AAP has dismissed the exit polls as inaccurate, citing past underestimations of their performance.
BJP leaders celebrated the exit poll predictions, attributing the potential win to public dissatisfaction with the AAP government and a desire for development. AAP countered with allegations of BJP’s involvement in electoral malpractice.
The counting of votes is scheduled for February 8th. The results will determine whether the BJP can make a comeback in Delhi after a 27-year absence and whether AAP will continue its governance of the national capital.
