Thu Feb 06 14:06:18 UTC 2025: ## Aussie Debutant Connolly Caps Meteoric Rise in Sri Lanka

**Galle, Sri Lanka** – Western Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly has made a stunning debut in the second Test against Sri Lanka, receiving Baggy Green cap number 471. The 21-year-old, who recently won the BBL|14 Player of the Tournament, replaces Todd Murphy in the Australian XI. This marks the fourth Australian debut in as many Tests.

Connolly, whose father is a former WA Premier Cricket player and coach, received his cap from former Test all-rounder Simon Katich, with his parents present for the momentous occasion. Despite a lack of first-class wickets, Australian captain Steve Smith expressed confidence in Connolly’s abilities, highlighting his work with assistant coach Daniel Vettori and his suitability to the spin-friendly Galle pitch.

Sri Lanka, having won the toss and elected to bat, also made changes to their lineup. Pathum Nissanka returned from injury, and Ramesh Mendis replaced Jeffrey Vandersay in the spin bowling department. Lahiru Kumara also joined the starting XI. A special pre-game presentation was held for Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who is playing his 100th and final Test.

The match marks a significant rejuvenation of the Australian Test team. Connolly is the fifth player to debut since the start of the Australian summer, continuing a trend of bringing younger players into the side. Australia won the first Test convincingly by an innings and 242 runs. The second Test is expected to be closely contested, with both teams seeking a strong performance.
