**United Nations, February 4, 2025** – China has strongly criticized the new tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Chinese goods, warning of potential countermeasures and asserting that a trade war benefits no one. Addressing a press conference on Monday, Chinese Ambassador to the UN Fu Cong stated that the tariffs violate World Trade Organization rules and that China is filing a complaint.

The criticism follows President Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff increase on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% increase on Chinese imports, justified by the White House as a means of addressing illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Ambassador Fu dismissed the administration’s justification, arguing that the increased tariffs are unwarranted, particularly given China’s strict regulations on fentanyl. He suggested the U.S. should focus on domestic demand-side issues rather than blaming other countries.

Despite escalating tensions, Ambassador Fu emphasized the importance of cooperation between China and the U.S., particularly within the framework of the United Nations. He highlighted the upcoming high-level UN Security Council debate on global governance, chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, which will include invitations to both UNSC members and non-members, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Ambassador Fu stressed the shared interests of China and the U.S. in areas such as anti-terrorism, anti-narcotics efforts, non-proliferation, and climate change, urging a professional and constructive approach to bilateral relations at the UN. He noted the countries’ significant financial contributions to the UN and the potential for collaboration on improving the organization’s efficiency.
