Wed Feb 05 10:16:17 IST 2025: ## Delhi Votes in High-Stakes Assembly Elections
**New Delhi, February 5, 2025** – Delhiites are heading to the polls today in a crucial assembly election, with a tight contest anticipated between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Congress party is also vying for a share of the votes. Over 13.7 million voters will decide the fate of nearly 700 candidates vying for 70 assembly seats across 13,766 polling stations.
Voting began at 7:00 AM and is expected to continue throughout the day. Security is tight, with over 200 companies of paramilitary forces and more than 35,000 Delhi Police personnel deployed, focusing particularly on the approximately 3,000 polling stations designated as sensitive. Drone surveillance is also being employed.
Key election issues include the polluted Yamuna River, corruption, and poor road conditions. A win for AAP would mark their third consecutive term in power, while both BJP and Congress aim for a return after prolonged periods in opposition – BJP has been out of power for over 25 years, and Congress since 2013.
Early voter turnout showed 8.1% participation by 9:00 AM, with prominent figures including President Droupadi Murmu, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, and several other dignitaries casting their votes. Statements from various political leaders reflected the high stakes of the election.
Atishi described the election as a “religious war” between those working for development and those engaging in “hooliganism,” expressing confidence in a victory for the “educated people” working for progress. Manish Sisodia urged voters to prioritize quality education, healthcare, and reliable water and electricity. BJP candidates emphasized their party’s commitment to Delhi’s development and urged young voters to consider the party’s legacy.
Several incidents have also been reported. A BJP MLA’s daughter appealed for support, highlighting the party’s contributions to Delhi. Police have reported arrests for alleged election-related offenses, including individuals apprehended with large sums of cash and others attempting to influence the election. One alleged incident involved a late-night campaign violation resulting in an FIR.
The day saw a mix of enthusiasm and concerns. Some voters highlighted the importance of exercising their democratic right, while others expressed frustrations with the electoral process. All eyes are now on the results, expected on February 8th.
