**New Delhi, February 5, 2025** – Delhiites are heading to the polls today in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, with approximately 1.56 crore voters deciding the fate of nearly 700 candidates vying for 70 seats. Voting began at 7:00 AM and will continue until 6:00 PM. The Election Commission urged voters to arrive early to avoid long queues.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, aims for a third consecutive term. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are hoping to regain power. Results are expected on February 8th.
Extensive security measures are in place to ensure a peaceful election process. This includes deployment of 220 companies of paramilitary forces, 35,626 Delhi Police personnel, and 19,000 home guards. Around 3,000 polling booths are categorized as sensitive, with heightened security. Drone surveillance is also being utilized.
Prominent figures, including President Droupadi Murmu, Union Minister Hardeep Puri, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, have already cast their votes. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi appealed to voters, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged participation and congratulated first-time voters via a social media post. AAP leader Manish Sisodia also encouraged voting.
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, emphasized the importance of voting, calling it a celebration of democracy. The Election Commission has established 13,766 polling booths across the city.
