Wed Feb 05 10:01:24 IST 2025: ## Delhi Assembly Elections: Tight Security as Voting Begins

**New Delhi, February 5, 2025** – Delhi is under heavy security as voting commenced today in the high-stakes Assembly elections. Over 1.56 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots at 13,766 polling stations across 70 constituencies. A total of 699 candidates are vying for seats in an election that could significantly alter the city’s political landscape.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is aiming for a third consecutive term, leveraging its governance record and welfare schemes. The BJP and Congress are hoping for a resurgence.

Authorities have deployed more than 30,000 police personnel and 220 companies of paramilitary forces to ensure peaceful elections. Nearly 3,000 polling booths have been designated as sensitive, with enhanced security measures including drone surveillance and specialized response teams. All 65 border points with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have been sealed.

Special Commissioner of Police (SPNO Delhi Assembly Elections) Devesh Chandra Srivastva stated that robust security arrangements are in place and that Delhi Police personnel are committed to ensuring free and fair elections. He highlighted the pre-poll measures taken, including the seizure of illegal firearms, liquor, drugs, and banned injections, as well as the arrest of thousands for alleged Model Code of Conduct violations. These actions resulted in the confiscation of 469 illegal firearms, 513 cartridges, 110,093 liters of liquor, and 196.602 kg of drugs worth over Rs 77.9 crore. Over 34,250 individuals were arrested or detained for MCC violations since January 7th.
