**Washington D.C.** – A significant number of US government websites went offline on Monday, impacting access to information from numerous agencies. An AFP review of a list provided by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) revealed that over 350 of nearly 1,400 federal sites were inaccessible. Affected agencies included the Departments of Defense, Commerce, Energy, Transportation, and Labor, as well as the Central Intelligence Agency and the Supreme Court.
The reasons for the outages remain unclear, though they coincide with the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to drastically reduce the size and scope of the federal government. This initiative, spearheaded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk as head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has already resulted in the announced closure of the US Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID’s website was offline Monday, and employees received instructions not to report to work. Musk referred to USAID as a “criminal organization.”
The disruptions also come after a Trump administration directive ordering the removal of all government-funded programs promoting “gender ideology,” leading to the scrubbing of LGBTQ+ related content from numerous websites, including those of key public health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Crucial HIV and LGBTQ+ youth data have disappeared from CDC websites, prompting concerns from health experts about the impact on public health initiatives and disease monitoring. The Infectious Diseases Society of America issued a statement expressing deep concern about the removal of this critical information.
While the timing and causes of the website outages are still under investigation, the events highlight the far-reaching consequences of the Trump administration’s ongoing government restructuring.
