**Bengaluru, February 3, 2025** – Upalokayuktas K.N. Phaneendra and B. Veerappa conducted an inspection of Bengaluru’s Mittaganahalli landfill on Monday, addressing mounting resident concerns over pollution and health hazards. The landfill, which receives 380-400 garbage trucks daily, has been cited for unbearable stench, increased pests, and potential contamination of a nearby lake. Residents voiced worries about the impact on children’s health and the large number of scavenging birds.

Following the inspection, which included officials from the BBMP, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd., and the KSPCB, the Upalokayuktas directed immediate remedial measures and a comprehensive action plan within 15 days. The KSPCB has been tasked with conducting environmental tests and proposing corrective actions.

Separately, the BBMP has launched an investigation into alleged irregularities in solid waste management billing in the Gandhi Nagar division. Special Commissioner (Health) Suralkar Vikas Kishor will lead the probe into allegations of ₹2 crore in unauthorized payments over the past three years, potentially involving a hacked billing system and collusion with unauthorized persons. The investigation was prompted by a complaint filed by former BBMP councillor N.R. Ramesh. The investigation is expected to thoroughly examine the allegations and determine the extent of any wrongdoing. These events highlight the growing concerns about waste management in Bengaluru and the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
