Tue Feb 04 16:19:00 UTC 2025: ## Mystery Spinner’s Rise Prompts Champions Trophy Squad Speculation

**New Delhi** – Following Varun Chakravarthy’s outstanding performance in the recent T20I series against England, where he claimed 14 wickets and earned the Player of the Series award, calls for his inclusion in India’s Champions Trophy squad are growing louder. Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has publicly voiced his belief that Chakravarthy, despite lacking ODI experience, could yet earn a place in the prestigious tournament.

While India’s provisional Champions Trophy squad already includes four spinners, Ashwin suggests the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, might consider a change. The deadline for squad modifications is February 11th, leaving open the possibility of Chakravarthy’s inclusion.

“There is a chance he might make it,” Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel, acknowledging the provisional nature of the squad. However, he also highlighted the difficulty of such a decision: “If a seamer goes out and Varun comes in, it will be an added spinner (five). I don’t know who they would want to drop.”

Ashwin believes Chakravarthy will likely be given a chance to showcase his skills in the upcoming ODI series against England. A strong showing there could significantly bolster his chances for the Champions Trophy. “I don’t think it’s an easy call to take him directly to the Champions Trophy. He has not played ODIs,” Ashwin explained. Nevertheless, he lauded Chakravarthy’s achievement, calling him the “Chakravarthy of T20I cricket.” The selection committee’s final decision will be closely watched as the tournament approaches.
