Tue Feb 04 16:22:55 UTC 2025: ## Conviction of UK’s Most Prolific Child Killer Questioned by Medical Experts
**London, UK** – The conviction of Lucy Letby, serving 15 life sentences for murdering seven newborn babies, is facing renewed scrutiny. An international panel of 14 independent paediatric experts, led by retired Canadian physician Dr. Shoo Lee, claims the evidence used to convict Letby is flawed and doesn’t support the murder charges.
Letby, 35, was found guilty in 2023-24 of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016. Her defense team has applied to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) for a review, arguing there was a miscarriage of justice.
Dr. Lee, whose 1989 paper on air embolism in babies was cited during Letby’s trial, contends that the evidence presented – which included allegations of air injections into the infants’ bloodstreams – was misinterpreted. The panel concluded that natural causes or inadequate medical care, rather than deliberate actions by Letby, were responsible for the deaths.
Letby’s lawyer, Mark McDonald, stated that the medical evidence used to secure her conviction has been “demolished,” and that she is “sitting in prison for the rest of her life for a crime that just never happened.”
The CCRC has received the application and is beginning its assessment. The commission has the power to refer the case back to the Court of Appeal if it finds evidence of a potential miscarriage of justice. This development raises serious questions about the integrity of the original trial and the possibility of a wrongful conviction.
