**New Delhi:** The Indian government has offered land in the Rajghat complex for a memorial dedicated to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, government sources confirmed to NDTV. The plot, located adjacent to the memorial of former President Pranab Mukherjee, will be allocated once Dr. Singh’s family establishes a trust. The government will provide ₹25 lakh (approximately $300,000 USD) to the trust for the memorial’s construction.
Dr. Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, is renowned for his significant contributions to India’s economic reforms. His role as Finance Minister in 1991, during the liberalization of the Indian economy, is particularly noteworthy.
Following his death on December 26, 2022, the Congress party criticized the government’s perceived delay in securing a suitable location for a memorial. This prompted a rebuttal from the BJP, highlighting the Congress’s failure to erect a memorial for former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.
The government’s decision comes after the recent allocation of land for the Pranab Mukherjee memorial. Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of the former president, publicly expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the gesture, noting the family’s appreciation for the unexpected but gracious offer. She also criticized the Congress for their demands regarding Dr. Singh’s memorial, pointing out their lack of a condolence meeting for her father.
