GUNTUR, Andhra Pradesh – A long delay in the completion of three major drinking water projects in Guntur has left residents frustrated. The most prominent is the Gorantla head water tank, under construction since 2018. This ₹33.5 crore project, part of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 1.0, Phase 2, is now nearing completion, with the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu stating that 90% of the work is finished. The project, which aims to provide gravity-based water supply to Gorantla, Reddypalem, and other areas, is expected to be fully operational within the next two months.

The delay, according to the Commissioner, is due to several factors over the past three years. However, GMC Standing Committee member Nukavarapu Balaji blames the previous YSRCP government for neglecting the project and failing to release necessary funds.

Besides the Gorantla project, two additional major projects, budgeted at ₹170 crore and ₹184 crore respectively, are underway under the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). These projects aim to improve water supply infrastructure in newly merged villages. Upon completion of all three projects, the GMC anticipates that the city’s water needs will be met for at least the next 20 years.
