WASHINGTON — The price of eggs has skyrocketed in the United States, leaving consumers reeling and igniting a political firestorm. The average price of a dozen eggs has increased by 50% in the past year, reaching $5.29 in mid-January, according to market data. This surge, particularly sharp since November 2024, is largely attributed to a highly contagious avian flu outbreak that has decimated the chicken population, reducing egg supply. Over 13 million hens have been lost or culled.
The price increase has sparked outrage among consumers and accusations of price gouging. New York Attorney General Letitia James is among those warning businesses against exploiting the situation. The issue has also become a major political battleground.
The Democratic party is criticizing President Trump for failing to deliver on his campaign promise to lower food prices, highlighting the significant price increase since his election. Conversely, the Trump administration’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, blamed the Biden administration for the price hike, citing a 65% increase during Biden’s presidency and referencing the culling of over 100 million chickens under his administration. Leavitt did not explain the reasons for this culling.
Adding to the economic pressure, President Trump has implemented tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China, a move that economists warn will further inflate consumer prices. These countries have vowed retaliatory tariffs. The situation leaves American consumers facing significantly higher costs, with the political ramifications continuing to unfold.
