Tue Feb 04 14:39:20 UTC 2025: **Delhi Votes Today in High-Stakes Assembly Election**
NEW DELHI – Delhiites head to the polls today, February 5th, to elect their next government in a closely contested three-way race between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress. Over 1.56 crore voters will cast ballots across 13,766 polling stations. Results will be announced on February 8th.
The AAP, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, seeks a third consecutive term, highlighting its record on welfare schemes and governance. Kejriwal, contesting from the New Delhi seat against BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’s Sandeep Dixit, has expressed confidence in winning over 55 seats. The BJP, aiming to regain power after 27 years, has conducted extensive campaigning, emphasizing national security and development. The Congress, having failed to win a single seat in the previous election, is hoping to regain some ground.
The campaign has been marked by accusations of intimidation and voter suppression, with AAP alleging misuse of Delhi Police by the BJP. FIRs have been filed against both AAP and BJP candidates for alleged violations of the model code of conduct. Further, the AAP has accused Delhi Police of issuing threats to their candidates, while the BJP has criticized the AAP’s governance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently criticized Kejriwal’s governance, a day before elections. Meanwhile, Congress candidate Sandeep Dixit expressed confidence in his party’s performance, believing voters still remember the legacy of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Voting will take place from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, with exit polls prohibited until 6:30 pm on voting day. The election is being closely watched nationally, given Delhi’s significance as the nation’s capital. The outcome will significantly impact the political landscape of India.
