**Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu, February 4, 2025** – Archaeologists excavating a Sangam-age fort site in Porpanaikottai, Pudukottai district, have unearthed a bone point believed to be an ancient weaving tool, along with a tiny piece of gold. The discoveries add to a significant collection of artifacts unearthed since excavations began in 2023.
The bone point, weighing 7.8 grams and measuring 7.4 cm in length, was found at a depth of 192-196 cm. This follows the discovery of a gold stud with a floral design during the first excavation season. The newly found gold fragment is a further indication of the richness of the site.
According to Excavation Director T. Thangadurai, a total of 1,743 antiquities have been unearthed so far, including hopscotches, beads (glass, soapstone, crystal, agate, and carnelian), bangles, iron and copper nails, terracotta items, and various tools. Finance and Archaeology Minister Thangam Thennarasu stated on X that the bone point highlights the sophisticated lifestyle of ancient Tamils.
The second season of excavations, which resumed in January after a monsoon break, is currently underway across nine trenches. The site, located approximately 6.5 km east of Pudukottai town, continues to yield valuable insights into the region’s ancient past.
