**New Delhi, February 3, 2025** – The Supreme Court of India today dismissed a petition seeking the recall of Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi. The petition, filed by advocate C.R. Jaya Sukin, alleged that Governor Ravi had insulted the people of Tamil Nadu by criticizing Tamil culture and humiliating those who follow Dravidian concepts. The petition cited Governor Ravi’s walkout from the Legislative Assembly in January, where he left before the singing of the Tamil invocation, ‘Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu’.
Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, heading the bench, rejected the petition, stating that “nobody does that… nobody can do that,” in response to the allegation of insulting the Tamil Nadu people. The court deemed the petition “misconceived,” emphasizing its commitment to functioning within the bounds of the Constitution.
The dismissal comes amidst ongoing tensions between the Tamil Nadu government and Governor Ravi over various issues, including the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in state universities. The Supreme Court is already hearing multiple petitions filed by the Tamil Nadu government concerning the Governor’s actions regarding bill assent, prosecutions, prisoner remission, and the constitution of search committees. Senior advocates representing the state government have previously described the Governor’s conduct as that of a “political opponent.” In January, the Supreme Court had requested the Attorney General to facilitate a resolution to the ongoing stalemate.
