**Madurai, February 2, 2025** – Students from The American College in Madurai observed World Wetlands Day on Saturday with a visit to the Samanatham tank. The initiative, part of the college’s Green Management Programme, highlighted the vital role wetlands play in human survival and environmental health.
Programme coordinator Rajesh emphasized the importance of wetlands in improving water quality, controlling soil erosion, and providing habitat for numerous species, including many threatened and endangered ones. He also noted the concerning presence of water hyacinth in Madurai’s tanks, which harms both birds and other aquatic life. The urgent need for its removal was stressed.
Approximately 50 students participated in the event, guided by Green Management Programme project leader Bhagavathy. The visit served as a practical lesson in environmental awareness and the importance of wetland conservation.
