**Wellington, New Zealand** – Mount Taranaki, or Taranaki Maunga as it’s known in Maori, has been granted legal personhood, marking a significant step in recognizing Indigenous rights and environmental protection. The dormant volcano, a sacred site for the Maori people, is now legally recognized as a human being, transferring ownership from the New Zealand government.
This landmark decision, enshrined in the Taranaki Maunga Collective Redress Bill passed on January 30th, follows centuries of land confiscation and injustices suffered by the Maori during colonization. The bill addresses the violation of a treaty between the Crown and Maori representatives, which saw the mountain’s name and ownership usurped. While some reserves were returned following protests, the majority of Taranaki Maunga remained under government control until this recent action.
The Maori view Taranaki Maunga as a sacred ancestor, interconnected with all living things within a larger ecosystem. Granting the volcano legal personhood reflects their belief that respecting Indigenous traditions is crucial for effective environmental conservation.
The decision makes Taranaki Maunga the third natural feature in New Zealand to be granted individual status, joining Te Urewera National Park and the Whanganui River. A joint management body, comprising representatives from the Maori iwi community, the government, and others will now oversee the mountain’s protection and care.
Minister Paul Goldsmith stated that the decision acknowledges past wrongs and aims to support the Maori iwi in realizing their aspirations for the future. The 8,261-foot volcano, a popular destination for adventure tourism, will now be protected under a framework that respects both its cultural significance and its ecological importance.
