**Washington, D.C.** – A three-day weekend awaits as the nation prepares to observe Presidents Day on Monday, February 17, 2025. Originally designated as Washington’s Birthday to honor George Washington, the holiday now celebrates all U.S. presidents.
The holiday’s date, the third Monday of February, was established by the Uniform Monday Holiday Law of 1971 to create longer weekends. While Washington’s actual birthday, according to the Gregorian calendar, is February 22nd, the shift to a Monday observance also conveniently falls between the birthdays of Washington and Abraham Lincoln (February 12th), leading to the commonly used name “Presidents Day.”
The observance of Washington’s birthday dates back to well before it became a federal holiday in 1879. Early commemorations included Senate readings of Washington’s Farewell Address. It wasn’t until 1885 that all federal employees received paid time off.
This year, federal offices, banks, the stock market, and most schools will be closed. Most retail establishments will remain open. Federal employees will enjoy a day off, with some federal holidays observed on a Monday or Friday if they fall on a weekend.
