FRENCH CREEK, W.Va. (February 2, 2025) — Hundreds flocked to the West Virginia State Wildlife Center today for the 48th annual Groundhog Day celebration, eager to hear the weather prediction from French Creek Freddie, the state’s resident groundhog. In a highly anticipated event, Freddie emerged from his burrow and, much to the delight of the crowd, did *not* see his shadow. This traditional sign, according to folklore, predicts an early spring for the region.
The free event, which began at 9:30 a.m., included an opening ceremony followed by Freddie’s 10 a.m. pronouncement. Following the prediction, attendees enjoyed photos with Freddie, refreshments, and activities such as a “wood chucking” contest. The Wildlife Center, home to nearly 30 native species, was also open for exploration.
Trevor Moore, wildlife biologist at the center, commented on the event’s popularity, noting the enthusiasm of returning fans who make the annual pilgrimage to French Creek. Despite cloudy skies and a high of 49°F, the spirit of early spring prevailed. The forecast for tonight calls for overcast skies and a low of 42°F.
