**CHENNAI, February 2, 2025** – Tamil Nadu’s significant leather and footwear industry is poised for growth following the Union Budget 2025-26, which allocated funds to boost the sector’s competitiveness. Contributing 38% of India’s footwear and leather products output and 47% of its leather exports, Tamil Nadu stands to benefit significantly.

The budget introduced a focused scheme aimed at improving productivity, quality, and global competitiveness within the industry. This initiative will support design capabilities, component manufacturing, and the acquisition of machinery needed for producing both leather and non-leather footwear.

R. Selvam, Executive Director of the Council for Leather Exports, highlighted the removal of the 20% export duty on crust leather and the 10% import duty on wet blue leather as key positive changes. These measures, he stated, will strengthen the tanning industry and significantly increase exports of value-added leather products.
