Sun Feb 02 13:51:52 UTC 2025: ## Madurai Grapples with Rising Number of Stray Cow Accidents

**Madurai, February 2, 2025** – The streets of Madurai are witnessing a surge in accidents involving stray cattle, leading to injuries for both animals and humans. Recent incidents highlight the growing problem, with one cow rescued from a seven-foot-deep water channel after being trapped for three days, and a motorcyclist seriously injured after colliding with a cow in the dark.

The issue stems from cattle owners allowing their animals to roam freely, often resulting in the animals straying onto busy roads. Rescue workers report numerous similar incidents, emphasizing the lack of responsible animal management. One rescuer noted the prevalence of open, deep water channels posing a significant danger.

The problem isn’t limited to isolated incidents. A flower seller near Mattuthavani reported three to four accidents weekly at the same location, with one recent incident resulting in the death of a calf. The lack of streetlights and the cows’ habit of resting on roadsides exacerbate the danger, particularly at night.

Solutions proposed include closing open water channels, fitting stray cattle with reflective collars or GPS tags for better visibility, and relocating garbage bins away from road junctions. While Madurai Corporation officials claim efforts are underway to reduce the stray cattle menace, including imposing fines on owners, critics argue that a more comprehensive approach is needed. Experts emphasize the responsibility of cattle owners and advocate for collaborative efforts to mitigate this growing public safety concern. The rapid urbanization of Madurai, they say, is a contributing factor.
