**New Delhi** – India’s Union Budget 2025, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, introduces revised tax slabs aimed at boosting consumption by providing significant relief to middle-class taxpayers. The new regime offers zero tax on annual income up to ₹4 lakh, a significant increase from the previous ₹3 lakh threshold. Tax rates have also been revised for higher income brackets, with a graduated scale up to 30% for incomes above ₹24 lakh.
While the changes simplify the tax structure, initial confusion arose regarding the exact benefits. The government clarified that rebates will be provided, resulting in effective tax-free income up to ₹12.75 lakh for salaried individuals (including standard deductions). For example, an individual earning ₹16 lakh annually will pay ₹1.2 lakh in tax under the new system – ₹50,000 less than under the previous structure. High-income earners will also see a reduction, with those earning ₹50 lakh per annum saving over ₹1 lakh.
The new tax slabs apply to the “New Tax Regime,” a simplified system without exemptions. While the old tax regime remains available, the government anticipates continued migration to the new system, given that approximately 75% of taxpayers already utilize it. The decision to switch depends on individual circumstances and the potential for claiming exemptions under the old regime. Taxpayers are advised to carefully compare their tax liabilities under both systems to determine which offers greater benefits. The government emphasizes that the new system’s aim is to inject more disposable income into the middle class, stimulating consumer spending and providing marginal relief to higher-income individuals.
