NEW YORK — The dazzling seven-minute opening sequence for “50 Years of SNL Music” was a labor of love, according to its director, Questlove. Speaking to Deadline, the renowned musician revealed the montage, a masterful remix of nearly 100 SNL performances, took almost a year to edit.

Questlove, tasked by Lorne Michaels in early 2021, dedicated two and a half years to the project. His meticulous research involved watching four to eight SNL episodes daily. However, even his dedication was matched by his editor, who independently ingested vast quantities of SNL footage using a different, more automated approach.

The final product, however, boasts a distinctly human touch, showcasing the Roots crew’s skill in creating seamless transitions—a feat Questlove believes currently surpasses the capabilities of AI. He questioned whether humans will continue to be trusted for such creative endeavors or if AI will eventually take over. The montage, a testament to both meticulous human curation and technological assistance, is already generating Emmy buzz.
