**Dehradun, Uttarakhand – February 2, 2025** – Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, has emerged as a prominent figure in Indian politics, a trajectory marked by an unexpected ascent and decisive leadership. Appointed in July 2021, Dhami, then just 45, defied expectations when the BJP selected him as Chief Minister, surprising even himself. His recent implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state further solidifies his position.
Dhami’s rise began humbly in a remote village in Pithoragarh. A first-generation postgraduate, holding law and public administration degrees, he began his political journey through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Mentorship from former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari is often cited as instrumental in his early career.
After years of working behind the scenes for the BJP, Dhami secured his first MLA seat in 2012. Despite setbacks, including a rejected ticket in 2007 and losing his constituency in the 2022 elections, his political acumen and ability to garner support from both party members and opposition figures enabled him to secure a second term as Chief Minister – a first for the state. He subsequently won a seat in Champawat.
Dhami’s leadership has been characterized by the implementation of several significant laws, including a stringent anti-cheating law and the Uttarakhand Public and Private Property Damage Recovery Act. The UCC, implemented last week, stands as a landmark achievement in his tenure, which has focused on fulfilling BJP’s national agenda. While acknowledging the challenges, Dhami remains committed to continuing on the path set by the party.
