**Omdurman, Sudan (February 2, 2025)** – At least 54 people were killed and 158 wounded in an attack on a bustling open market in Omdurman, Sudan, on Saturday, health authorities reported. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group is blamed for the assault on the Sabrein Market, the latest in a string of deadly attacks fueling the ongoing civil war.
The attack, which caused widespread destruction and reportedly claimed the lives of numerous women and children, drew swift condemnation from Khalid al-Aleisir, Mof Culture and Government spokesperson, who described it as a “blatant violation of international humanitarian law.” The Sudanese Doctors Syndicate reported that a mortar shell landed near Al-Naw Hospital, which is overwhelmed with casualties, and is severely short-staffed. Graphic images circulating on social media show numerous body bags outside the hospital and wounded civilians receiving treatment in makeshift conditions.
This attack follows a similar incident last week where approximately 70 people perished in an RSF attack on a hospital in El Fasher, Darfur. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has claimed over 28,000 lives, displaced millions, and created a humanitarian crisis with widespread famine. The United Nations and human rights groups have documented widespread atrocities, including ethnic cleansing and rape, leading the International Criminal Court to investigate potential war crimes and crimes against humanity. The U.S. has even accused the RSF of genocide.
While the RSF has yet to comment on the Omdurman attack, recent battlefield losses have shifted the momentum in favor of the Sudanese military. The military has regained control of key areas, including Wad Medani and the country’s largest oil refinery. The ongoing conflict continues to destabilize the nation and cause immense suffering.
