The controversy began with the circulation of several recent clips showing Narayan kissing female fans on the lips, even initiating the kisses in at least one instance. Older footage has also resurfaced, showing similar instances with fellow singers Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal. While some interactions appear consensual, others show the recipients visibly uncomfortable. One video shows Narayan kissing Yagnik on the cheek at an awards ceremony, leaving her appearing shocked. Another instance shows Yagnik appearing uncomfortable as he kisses her at a different event. A clip of Narayan kissing Shreya Ghoshal on the cheek after she won an award also shows a moment of visible discomfort before she composes herself.

In response to the criticism, Narayan told Hindustan Times that the actions were a demonstration of fans’ “love and deewangi” (madness), adding that some people even encourage such behavior. He maintained that he is a “decent man.” However, the singer’s explanation has done little to quell the ongoing debate surrounding his actions and the appropriateness of his behavior.
