Sun Feb 02 11:00:33 UTC 2025: ## Rwanda-Backed Rebels Seize Goma, DRC; Hundreds Killed in Escalating Conflict
**KINSHASA, DRC** – The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis following the capture of Goma, the region’s largest city, by the M23 rebel group, backed by Rwandan forces. The takeover, a significant escalation of a decade-long conflict, has resulted in at least 773 confirmed deaths in Goma and its surrounding areas over the past week, according to Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya. He warned the actual death toll could be far higher, citing concerns about mass graves and the evacuation of Rwandan fighters.
The M23, one of over 100 armed groups vying for control of the DRC’s mineral-rich east, has made significant gains, though the Congolese army has managed to reclaim some villages. The conflict has also seen the surrender of foreign mercenaries to the rebels. Despite the violence, hundreds of Goma residents have begun returning to the city after M23 pledged to restore essential services.
The UN has expressed grave concerns about the situation. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN peacekeeping chief, reported that M23 and Rwandan forces are advancing towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, posing a threat to a further humanitarian catastrophe. The capture of Goma has effectively halted aid delivery across eastern DRC, leaving countless civilians stranded and vulnerable. Rose Tchwenko of Mercy Corps described the situation as a “standstill,” highlighting the critical lack of humanitarian access. The swift advance of the rebels and the high death toll have sparked international alarm and fears of further displacement.
