**Coimbatore, February 2, 2025** – A 45-year-old man died from self-inflicted burns after setting himself on fire at the Kavundampalayam police station on Saturday. Sekar, alias Auto Sekar, succumbed to his injuries at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) late Saturday night, succumbing to over 70% burns.
Police had arrested Sekar’s 19-year-old son, Mani Bharath, and his 27-year-old friend, N. Janakiraman, the previous day on charges of ganja possession. Sekar’s wife, Jayapriya, alleges that the police unjustly charged her son and that the Inspector threatened her husband when he inquired about the arrest, leading to his desperate act. She claims this threat prompted Sekar’s self-immolation at the police station around 9 a.m. Saturday.
