**Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, February 2, 2025** – The Chittoor district administration has launched an intensified road safety campaign following a concerning rise in road accidents. District Collector Sumit Kumar announced a month-long initiative under the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan, part of the 36th National Highway Security Awareness Month.
Addressing the alarming statistics, Collector Kumar revealed a significant increase in fatalities and injuries from 2022 to 2023, with a slight decrease in fatalities but a surge in injuries in 2024. Two-wheeler riders constituted a large percentage of victims, with 209 deaths in 2024 alone, many attributed to a lack of helmet usage.
The administration will implement a strict crackdown on traffic violations, focusing on helmet and seatbelt usage, and drunk driving. Violators will face fines and potential imprisonment under Section 129 of the Motor Vehicle Act. The campaign will also highlight the importance of the “Golden Hour” following accidents, emphasizing the crucial role of immediate medical assistance and encouraging Good Samaritans to help accident victims without fear of legal repercussions. A ₹5,000 reward will be given to those who transport injured individuals to hospitals.
To improve road conditions, the administration is addressing hazardous road sections (“black spots”) through pothole repairs and the completion of pending roadwork. Collector Kumar urged the public to prioritize responsible driving and adherence to safety regulations to collectively reduce road accidents.
